Module 3: Task 4 – Listening & Speaking Video
(20 minutes)
In this activity, you’ll practice listening to and saying the words and phrases you’ve learned in this module.
Let’s practice some things you may say to a person who is hurt. Repeat after me:
Are you okay?
Do you need food or water?
Where does it hurt?
We’re here to help you.
Tell me what happened.
Here are some things a person may say to you. Repeat after me:
Yes, please take me to a clinic.
I haven’t seen a doctor yet. I want to see a doctor.
I’m not feeling well. I’m sick.
My stomach hurts.
Now, I’ll ask you some questions. Try to answer these questions aloud. Use the picture on the screen to decide how to answer.
Where does it hurt?
You might say, “My head hurts” or “I have a headache”.
Is this water safe to drink?
You might say, “No, it’s not safe to drink” or “No, it’s dirty”
What happened here?
You might say, “There was a drought” or “There’s not enough water” or “There’s not enough rain”
Do we have a first aid kit?
You can say, “Yes, we have a first aid kit” or “The first aid kit is in the truck”
Here are some pictures of people who need help. I’ll describe each picture and say how to help. Repeat after me.
His arm is broken. He needs a splint or a sling.
They’re hungry. They’re starving. They need some food.
He’s wounded. He’s hurt. He needs a bandage.
She’s pregnant. She’s going to have a baby. She needs a midwife.
Now, you will see pictures of things that people might need. Practice how you could ask for these things:
You can say, is there a toilet here?
You could ask, Is there a sink here? or Is there running water? Or Can I wash my hands?
You can ask, Do you have a sling?
You can say, Do you have a thermometer? Is there a thermometer here?
Watch this video again and practice speaking aloud.
